Well summertime is officially here! Since my last update I’ve had some time to hang out in Durango and it’s been awesome. After the Bump and Grind I had a midseason 10 day break. I always take about a week and a half off this time of year to gear up for the second half of the season. I also take some time to look back and see what worked and what didn’t.
During my break I got to spend a lot of time with Meg and Winston and quite a bit of time on the range as well. By the time my break was over my hands had blisters from hitting so many golf balls. It could be that I don’t hit them all that well but I’m just going with the overall volume as the cause. I was also able to do some hiking up in the high country and got back in the gym. With all these different activities I was pretty much sore all over but mentally refreshed which is the whole point.
It’s funny as a professional cyclist you can be completely cooked but after just a few days off the bike all you can think about is getting back on it. I started training again last week and it felt so nice to get back out there for some longer rides. After some time off I typically go through a base building phase which is what I have done so far. This weekend is the Missoula PROXCT which is short and intense, rather then long and steady so not optimal for this build up phase in my training but we’ll see how it goes.
These next five weeks I have Missoula PROXCT, Windham PROXCT, Marathon National Championships, Wisconsin PROXT and XC National Championships. That is quite a bit of racing with some import National Champs races so it’s been interesting trying to devise a training program that will allow me to have good form for the National Champs but not suck at the PROXCTs. I have a plan so we’ll see how it works out.
I wonder what Winstons doing right now…..
